Call me an Optimist.
Call me an Over-Achiever.
Call me a Dreamer.
But you can't call me haphazard.
Hi, I’m Terra Bohlmann, Business Coach + Creator of The Business Map Method™.
Think of me like the pilot on your private jet. Destination: Dream Business!
I knew early on that with a great system you could have it all.
So My Story Begins...
“I’ll take a grande iced decaf almond milk, 2-pump with whip iced mocha, please.” The barista looks at me intensely and narrows her eyes. I know what’s coming. I hand her my laminated card with my order clearly printed in bold block Georgian font 14 (because studies show that this font is the easiest on the eye to read).
My order comes out perfectly brewed…see? System.
I have never been the type to wallow in the past but I might spend a few minutes there spying so I can analyze and extract better systems for the future.
Because really, it only takes one time leaving for a meeting without your laptop, calculating how far your car can go after your gas light comes on, catching every red light, dropping your cell phone in the toilet, and then checking your calendar only to find that the important meeting that started 15 minutes ago, really isn’t until tomorrow. Am I right?
Imagine this: You’re staring at the ultra-bright computer screen in your home office for 57-minutes. Your coffee is cold, your mind is numb, and your head is pounding from the pressure of trying to get everything done. Bing…Bing…chat boxes pop up simultaneously. “Let’s meet at the bar in 20 minutes.”
Something like a porcelain plate just tipped off the highest shelf of your brain and cracked into a hundred tiny porcelain pieces as it smashed onto your soul below.
This was not the plan.
Spiderman’s Uncle Ben said it best, “With great systems comes great power” …or something to that effect. – Hey, I never claimed to be a comic book expert, but you get the point.
Your plan was to be living the work-from-home corporate dream, but instead, you’re in solitary confinement.
You feel immense pressure to outperform expectations in a male-dominated industry and not to mention the guilt you feel for leaving those real-life twin boys with your live-in nanny so you could chase this dream of yours.
I was that dancing bear. Doing consulting acrobatics while juggling a husband, home along with my son and the two darlings I had to go through painful IVF to conceive. This is what you asked for, Terra. You want it all. Oh! I remember now…
“To whom more work is given, for whom will be given more responsibility.” – Still not it? I know I’m getting closer.
I longed to create a balance between my personal and professional life, I had chosen this work-from-home corporate position.
Instead, I felt wildly off kilter.
The dust residue is all that remained of my porcelain plate until Oprah spoke to me.
Oprah talks to me. Doesn’t she talk to you? I mean, not like at Morton's Steakhouse over warm French bread and clinging glasses of Cabernet talks to me, but she spoke to me through TV.
And, on her very last episode (the one before the fancy lights in the enormous arena where she was surrounded by famous friends and grateful supporters) she asked the question that changed it all for me.
Oprah told the audience that TV was her platform to serve the world. Then, she asked,
"So, What's Your Platform?"
My mind raced. The question bounced against walls of fear and doubt and through hollow thoughts before falling softly on the answer.
I knew I had to impact business women in a positive way so they didn’t feel trapped like I did.
Thank God for the internet.
Who’d of thought that the business and technology degree I received (because it was easy and paid well), would eventually turn into a successful business strategy practice that I adore.
See? Less time. More money. What I loved.
As a corporate consultant, the thing I loved even more than my morning cup of coffee was mentoring women.
I would miss drawing them wire diagrams, getting creative with product naming, sharing techy productivity secrets and especially helping them to make it to the top of their industry leader board because these were the things that came easiest to me.
I started to see big successes come from the women I was mentoring when it clicked…
Why not take what was easy and fun for me and turn it into a business?
I know what you’re thinking. “That was easy for you Terra, but I have to bills to pay.” I get that. And never being one to look backward.
I focused my gaze on what I could accomplish today to create a future I will love. What I would do next almost got me an all-expense paid trip to the psych ward.
My family thought I should be grateful for the miracle of my career. They expected me to get a nice steady job as a secretary at the local tractor company and marry a good, hard-working man and live happily ever after. (Hey, I did score on marrying the good, hard-working man part.)
I was grateful and I was determined to prove to myself that I had no limits. At first, I couldn’t easily see how I could quickly replace my high salary as a corporate consultant either because I was exhausted and overworked.
Remember the first day you started your corporate career. You were filled with excitement mingled with anticipation and drenched in thick layers of courage and determination.
You were unstoppable! You collected your thoughts, slipped on your high-heeled shoes and Ann Taylor pencil skirt and swung open the door to your successful life only to find the thrust of the wind beating you in the face and heels teetering on the 2-inch ledge of the corporate ladder.
Standing in that moment, you had a choice, to fly or die. You chose to fly.
I made the same choice. And I made it again when I decide to leave. So, I gracefully backed out of my corporate consulting career to rest, refuel, and launch my own business.
I flew tandem until I started making 6-figures on my own because I believe everyone needs a strategist to take them to the next level (and trust me, there is always a next level).
Now I fly the private jet carrying busy women who want to get their business passports stamped with credibility, visibility and success.
But...Can I Have It All?
People often ask me, “Terra, how can I have it all?” I realize I run the risk of sounding like a fortune cookie, but here goes:
“You cannot enjoy the view of your journey while navigating from your own map.”
The key is finding someone like me who can do the navigating while you enjoy the ride. I’m like your personal Garmin giving you turn-by-turn directions at just the right moment.
Then, if you get off course, I’ll recalculate and find another route or detour around obstacles in your path.
The point is, you can do it all, but you can’t do it by yourself, sometimes all it takes is a good Business Map™ to guide you.
THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION.
Let's get you on a steady platform where you can get major altitude and see your way to lucrative and fun, forward movement.
Ready for a business trip with big results?
Great. I’ll navigate. You fly.
Directions from Coffee to Wine.
I started to fuel my coffee obsession when I was the ripe ol’ age of 7.
I had a Strawberry Shortcake coffee mug that my grandparents used to fill with half milk, half (decaf) Sanka instant coffee, and 2 teaspoons of sugar. Today, I start my day with a good cup of coffee (believe it or not, decaf still) and end my day with a good glass of wine.
Of course, throughout the day, I’ll mix in a little smoothie, lots of water and green juice. I am the girl who could live on liquids alone, but I promise, I do eat solid food, too.
Maybe the biggest thing I’ve learned about how to create balance, how to have my coffee and drink my wine, too, is that I have to make friends with time.
If we keep fighting the past, time will feel like an enemy. To befriend time, we have to go with its flow and move forward.
That’s what I want for you and can help you achieve: Forward Movement.
I’ve found that my revenue (and my clients’ revenue) correlates with exactly what my calendar looks like. The more time you allocate to serving your ideal clients, prospecting for new clients and doing strategic marketing, the more money you make.
"I may be an entrepreneur, but Google Calendar is my boss."
Making money isn’t hard…it’s doing the same things over and over again and being consistent about the important tasks at hand.
I have the power to help create the success map and use my mad GPS skills to re-calibrate your business.
Ah! I got it now, “with great power comes great responsibility!”
As your business coach and strategist, I am responsible for teaching you how to move forward and find the balance you’re seeking.
I know your balance doesn’t look exactly like mine and you know you’ll never find what you’re looking for until you make the first step. It’s time for you to get off the hamster wheel that is stopping you from getting the results you want.
I can help you get farther faster and make more money along the way.
It’s my life’s mission to help women be free of the golden handcuffs or whatever restrains them from finding balance in their work and personal life.
When women make more money in their businesses, it gives them more freedom and choices to do what they were meant to do and love the ride.
Nine Things That Prove I. Am. Not. A. Ro-bot.
If a picture is hanging on a wall askew, I’ll straighten it. I have no shame.
If I receive bad service at a restaurant, I will analyze and evaluate their operations, extract the best possible scenarios and mentally improve the customer service experience all before finishing my glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
I have a big heart and lots of compassion, but I only cry about twice a year. It's the main reason I've never watched "The Notebook."
I struggle with "perfectionism" and use the philosophy of "done is better than perfect" every single day.
I have a mom who owns and operates a busy barber shop and a dad who was a lead singer of a rock band.
Because I believe in balance, I own enough designer handbags and shoes to start a pretty nice retail salon, and have an unhealthy obsession with Target and Home Goods.
My husband, Darin, is the secret to my life balance. Oh..he's 6'4" and I'm 5'1".
I've produced over 180 live events for women entrepreneurs and I make it my personal mission to outperform the previous event experience for attendees.
I'm in love with my rescue dog, Skylar Blue. And never thought I wanted a dog. Ha.
My Best Business Advice.
- Give back to the world in ways that are meaningful to yourself and your business.
- Reciprocity is a beautiful thing. Sometimes things come back to you differently than you planned…but great things always come to those who do great things in the world.
- What I've learned being an entrepreneur is when good people make good money, they do good things for the world.
